Laser Liposuction Introduction
When it comes to achieving a leaner, more sculpted body, many people find that stubborn pockets of fat remain—no matter how diligently they diet or exercise. Laser liposuction offers a minimally invasive way to target and eliminate these fat deposits with precision and minimal downtime. Unlike traditional liposuction, this advanced technique uses laser energy to liquefy fat before removal, making the process more efficient while tightening the surrounding skin.
At Maryland Plastic Surgery, board-certified surgeons Dr. Adam Summers and Dr. Christopher Spittler offer state-of-the-art laser liposuction to help you contour areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, neck, and more. With extensive experience in both aesthetic refinement and minimally invasive body sculpting, our surgeons customize each treatment plan to deliver smooth, natural-looking results.
Laser liposuction, also known as laser-assisted lipolysis, is a body contouring procedure that uses focused laser energy to break down fat cells for easier removal. The laser’s thermal energy also stimulates collagen production, which helps to tighten and firm the skin following fat extraction.
This dual-action technique offers a significant advantage over traditional liposuction by not only removing unwanted fat but also enhancing skin retraction in the treated areas. It’s particularly effective for individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity who want to avoid sagging or loose skin after fat removal.
During the procedure, a thin fiber-optic cannula is inserted under the skin through small incisions. The laser melts the fat, which is then suctioned out. Most treatments are performed under local anesthesia, and patients typically experience minimal discomfort and a shorter recovery period.
Various types of laser liposuction depends on the patient’s individual needs and medical history. At Maryland Plastic Surgery, your dedicated surgeon will help you choose the best option for you.
SmartLipo™ is one of the most well-known forms of laser-assisted liposuction. It uses a specific wavelength of laser energy to emulsify fat and stimulate skin tightening. This technique is ideal for smaller areas such as the chin, neck, arms, and love handles.
SlimLipo™ targets fat with dual laser wavelengths, allowing for greater flexibility in treating both fat and skin laxity. It is often used for larger treatment zones, including the abdomen, flanks, and thighs.
In many cases, laser liposuction can be performed while the patient is awake under local anesthesia. This “awake lipo” approach reduces the risks and downtime associated with general anesthesia and allows for faster recovery while still achieving excellent contouring results.
At Maryland Plastic Surgery & PURE MedSpa, Dr. Adam Summers and Dr. Christopher Spittler bring decades of experience and artistry to every cosmetic surgery they perform. Known for their precision and natural-looking results, both surgeons take a personalized approach—starting with an in-depth consultation to understand your goals and areas of concern. Whether you’re looking to lift sagging jowls, smooth deep lines, or restore youthful contours, Dr. Summers and Dr. Spittler are committed to helping you look like the best version of yourself. Their reputation for excellence and their dedication to patient satisfaction means you’ll be in the best hands—every step of the way.
Laser liposuction provides a less invasive option for body contouring with enhanced precision, making it a popular choice for patients seeking refinement with less downtime.
Benefits of laser liposuction include:
Effective removal of stubborn fat pockets
Stimulates natural collagen production for skin tightening
Reduced bruising, swelling, and discomfort compared to traditional lipo
Small incisions with minimal scarring
Quick recovery and return to normal activities
Performed under local anesthesia in most cases
Targets areas resistant to diet and exercise
Improved overall body shape and proportions
Laser liposuction is especially beneficial for individuals who want to enhance definition in targeted areas while also addressing mild skin laxity.
Laser liposuction is suitable for individuals who are at or near their ideal weight but struggle with localized fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise. It is not a substitute for weight loss, but rather a body contouring procedure designed to refine your shape.
You may be a good candidate for laser liposuction if you:
Have isolated pockets of fat resistant to traditional weight loss methods
Are in good overall health with no major medical conditions
Have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure
Have good skin elasticity or mild to moderate skin laxity
Are not significantly overweight or obese
Prefer a less invasive alternative to traditional liposuction
During your consultation, Dr. Summers or Dr. Spittler will assess your anatomy, goals, and skin condition to determine whether laser liposuction is the best option for you.
LET’S GET YOU STARTED
On the day of your surgery at Maryland Plastic Surgery & PURE MedSpa, you’ll be welcomed into our state-of-the-art surgical suite by Dr. Summers, Dr. Spittler, and our experienced clinical team. Before your procedure begins, we’ll review your surgical plan with you once more — giving you a final opportunity to ask questions or share any last-minute thoughts. Our goal is to ensure you feel completely comfortable, confident, and cared for every step of the way.
A board-certified anesthesiologist will then administer the appropriate anesthesia, which will have been carefully selected and discussed during your consultation to ensure a pain-free, relaxed experience throughout your procedure.
Once your ideal results have been achieved, your surgeon will carefully close the incisions using advanced suturing techniques designed to support healing and minimize visible scarring. In some cases, a small drain may be placed to prevent fluid buildup and support a smoother recovery process.
Most laser liposuction procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in our accredited surgical suite in Millersville, MD. Depending on the treatment area, the procedure may be done under local anesthesia with mild sedation or, in some cases, general anesthesia.
Upon arrival, you’ll review the treatment plan with your surgeon, and the targeted areas will be marked. After anesthesia is administered, a tiny incision is made to insert a thin laser fiber. The laser energy liquefies the fat, which is then suctioned out with a small cannula.
Once the procedure is complete, compression garments will be applied to help reduce swelling and support the treated area. You’ll spend a short time in recovery before returning home the same day with detailed instructions for aftercare.
Recovery from laser liposuction is typically faster and more comfortable than traditional liposuction. Most patients can return to work and light activities within a few days.
Here’s what you can expect during the recovery process:
Mild swelling, bruising, and soreness for the first few days
Compression garments worn for 1–2 weeks to aid healing and contouring
Avoidance of strenuous exercise for approximately two weeks
Gradual improvement in contour as swelling subsides over several weeks
Final results visible within 3 to 6 months as the body adjusts and collagen production improves
It’s important to follow all post-operative care instructions and attend follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure optimal results.

Laser liposuction offers several advantages over traditional liposuction, particularly for patients with mild skin laxity. The added benefit of skin tightening and reduced bruising makes it appealing for smaller, targeted areas. However, traditional lipo may be more appropriate for patients with large volumes of fat or poor skin elasticity. Your surgeon will help determine the best option for your goals.
Yes, one of the primary benefits of laser liposuction is that it stimulates collagen production, which can result in skin tightening. While it doesn’t replace surgical skin removal for severe laxity, it is highly effective for mild to moderate cases and helps improve overall tone and firmness in the treated area.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. Local anesthesia is typically used, and patients often describe a sensation of pressure or tugging during treatment. Post-operative soreness is generally mild and easily managed with over-the-counter or prescription medications.
You may begin to see changes in body contour within one to two weeks, but the final results will become more apparent as swelling subsides and collagen remodeling continues. Most patients see their best results at three to six months post-procedure.
Yes, the fat cells removed during laser liposuction do not regenerate. However, maintaining your results depends on a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Gaining weight after the procedure can lead to fat accumulation in untreated areas.
Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, neck, chin, knees, and back. The procedure is versatile and can be used to sculpt nearly any area with stubborn fat.
Yes, laser liposuction can be combined with other treatments such as tummy tuck, breast lift, or facial rejuvenation. Combining procedures allows for more comprehensive results and may reduce overall recovery time. Your surgeon will help you create a customized surgical plan.
Although rare, thermal injury is a possible complication of laser liposuction if the procedure is not performed properly. At Maryland Plastic Surgery, our board-certified surgeons use advanced equipment and follow rigorous safety protocols to ensure your treatment is safe and effective.
Awake lipo refers to liposuction performed under local anesthesia, allowing the patient to remain conscious. Laser lipo refers to the use of laser energy to assist with fat breakdown and skin tightening. Many laser lipo procedures are performed while the patient is awake, combining the benefits of both approaches.
Most patients return to work within 2 to 5 days, depending on the size and location of the treated area. Compression garments are worn for 1 to 2 weeks, and light exercise can usually resume after two weeks. Final results are seen after 3 to 6 months as the body heals and collagen remodeling is complete.
