What is a Earlobe Repair & Reduction?

Earlobe repair and reduction are minor surgical procedures designed to correct and reshape damaged or stretched earlobes. Earlobe repair typically addresses issues such as tears caused by earrings or trauma, while earlobe reduction focuses on reshaping large, elongated, or sagging earlobes due to aging or genetics.

These straightforward procedures are performed in-office under local anesthesia and can dramatically enhance the appearance of the ear, restoring proportion and symmetry to the face. The goal is always to achieve a natural look that blends seamlessly with your other features.

Types of Earlobe Repair & Reductions

Depending on your concerns, one or both of these techniques may be recommended to restore the ideal appearance of your earlobes.

Earlobe Repair

Earlobe repair involves closing and reshaping a split or torn earlobe. This is often necessary after trauma or years of wearing heavy earrings that eventually cause the skin to weaken and tear. The procedure typically involves excising the edges of the tear and meticulously suturing the tissue for a smooth, natural closure.

Earlobe Reduction

Earlobe reduction surgery is designed to resize and reshape earlobes that have become overly large, stretched, or sagging. Dr. Summers or Dr. Spittler will carefully remove excess tissue and recontour the earlobe to create a more youthful, balanced appearance. Incisions are strategically placed to be discreet and heal beautifully over time.

LET’S GET YOU STARTED

What's The First Step?

On the day of your surgery at Maryland Plastic Surgery & PURE MedSpa, you’ll be welcomed into our state-of-the-art surgical suite by Dr. Summers, Dr. Spittler, and our experienced clinical team. Before your procedure begins, we’ll review your surgical plan with you once more — giving you a final opportunity to ask questions or share any last-minute thoughts. Our goal is to ensure you feel completely comfortable, confident, and cared for every step of the way.

A board-certified anesthesiologist will then administer the appropriate anesthesia, which will have been carefully selected and discussed during your consultation to ensure a pain-free, relaxed experience throughout your procedure.

Once your ideal results have been achieved, your surgeon will carefully close the incisions using advanced suturing techniques designed to support healing and minimize visible scarring. In some cases, a small drain may be placed to prevent fluid buildup and support a smoother recovery process.

What To Expect On The Day Of Earlobe Repair or Reduction

Earlobe repair and reduction are performed as outpatient procedures at Maryland Plastic Surgery. You will arrive at our office, where the area will be numbed with local anesthesia to ensure your complete comfort during the procedure.

Dr. Summers or Dr. Spittler will carefully mark the treatment area, perform the necessary corrections, and meticulously close the incisions with fine sutures. The entire process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity of the case. Afterward, you will receive detailed aftercare instructions and will be able to return home the same day.

Earlobe Repair & Reduction Recovery

Recovery following earlobe repair or reduction is usually very straightforward. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort, mild swelling, and slight bruising, all of which resolve within a few days. Over-the-counter pain medications are usually sufficient to manage any post-operative soreness.

You will be advised to keep the area clean and dry and to avoid pressure or pulling on the earlobes as they heal. Stitches are generally removed within 5 to 7 days, or they may dissolve on their own depending on the type used. Most patients are back to normal activities almost immediately, although you should wait approximately 6 to 8 weeks before re-piercing the ears, if desired.

Earlobe Repair & Reduction FAQ's

Can I re-pierce my ears after Earlobe Repair?

Yes, but you will need to wait at least 6 to 8 weeks after the repair to allow the tissue to fully heal. When re-piercing, it’s important to avoid placing the new hole directly on the scar line. Our surgeons will guide you on where to re-pierce for optimal long-term results. Additionally, using lightweight earrings will help prevent future stretching or tearing.

Any surgery carries a risk of scarring, but scars from earlobe procedures are typically minimal and fade very well over time. Our surgeons place sutures and incisions with precision to ensure the best cosmetic outcome. Most patients find the final scar to be virtually unnoticeable once healing is complete.

Recovery is very quick. Minor swelling and tenderness are common for the first few days. Most patients return to normal activities immediately, though it’s recommended to avoid pulling or heavy pressure on the ears during the first couple of weeks. Full healing is typically achieved within 4 to 6 weeks.

The most common causes are heavy earrings, accidental trauma (such as an earring being pulled), aging-related thinning of the skin, and genetic predisposition to elongated lobes. Over time, these factors weaken the tissue, leading to splits, drooping, or sagging.

Yes, once repaired and fully healed, the earlobe should remain intact. However, patients should exercise care when wearing earrings to avoid re-injury. Choosing lightweight earrings and avoiding heavy jewelry can help maintain results for the long term.

Absolutely. Many patients choose to treat both earlobes during the same session for optimal symmetry and convenience. Whether you need a repair, reduction, or combination of both, it can easily be performed on both ears during the same appointment.

Most patients describe the procedure as virtually painless. Local anesthesia completely numbs the area during surgery, and afterward, any mild discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Patients are often surprised by how comfortable the experience is.

Typically, you can gently wash your hair and shower within 24 hours after surgery, but care must be taken not to soak or overly manipulate the surgical site. We will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to make sure you are cleaning the area appropriately without disrupting healing.

In most cases, earlobe repair is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. However, if the damage is due to a traumatic injury and causes significant functional impairment, some insurance plans may offer partial coverage. Our team can assist you in verifying your benefits if needed.

Yes! Earlobe repair or reduction can easily be combined with other facial procedures, such as a facelift, neck lift, or skin resurfacing treatments. Many patients appreciate the opportunity to address multiple aesthetic concerns at once for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.
