Is plastic surgery safe?

All surgical procedures are accompanied by a certain degree of risk, whether the procedures are for medical or cosmetic reasons. At the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center & PURE MedSpa, our team is dedicated to making your procedure go smoothly and minimize the risk of complications. To do this, we carefully review your medical history and current health condition before deciding if it is safe for you to proceed with a procedure. It is important that you fully disclose all pertinent information so that we are able to make an accurate assessment of the risks involved.

The most common issues related to non-surgical procedures are the inconvenience of having more treatments than expected to achieve the desired results. For example, it may take more laser treatments to eliminate brown spots or broken blood vessels than was originally expected. The most common issue related to laser treatments is the potential to develop hyperpigmentation. If hyperpigmentation does develop, it could take many months of additional treatment to begin to see that fade. The most common issues related to surgical procedures relate to discoloration of the scar, prolonged swelling, and residual laxity of desire for contouring. Each of these issues can be treated with good outcomes. In rare cases, delayed healing and subsequent scars can result which require further surgery to adequately resolve.

If you are having a general anesthetic for a surgical procedure, you will also have a pre-operative clearance by your primary care physician, who will check blood work, get an EKG, and evaluate any other studies to ensure that you are in optimal health prior to a procedure. In the even any abnormalities are discovered during your pre-operative examination, we will evaluate the safety of proceeding. If you have an active infection, we will want you to get that treated and resolved prior to your procedure. In summary, although it is not possible to eliminate the risks of complications, we will take every precaution necessary to minimize them when possible.
