While plastic surgery has traditionally been the domain of women, more and more men have been opting for cosmetic surgery with quick recovery in the last two decades. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of men receiving plastic surgery has gone up 273 percent since 1997, accounting for more than 1 million procedures performed in 2013 and even more in 2014.
In fact, the procedures that men opt for aren’t much different from those women prefer either. According to the ASAPS’s Smart Beauty Guide, the most common surgeries men opt for are rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, ear surgery, male breast reduction and liposuction.
“Historically — for at least 20 years — my practice has been mainly women, about 90 percent. Now about 20 percent of my patients on the O.R. table are male. Men are coming in for facelifts, eyelid surgery, turkey necks, jowls and sometimes breast reduction for the treatment of gynecomastia,” one Los Angeles-based plastic surgeon told the source. “The majority of my patients are still women, but it’s changing.”
Non-invasive cosmetic procedures are on the rise for men as well. According to the ASAPS, injectables and laser treatments are becoming just as popular among male patients as they are among females, and some plastic surgeons are even basing their practices around this new trend, offering male-specific options in their work.
This trend is being driven by the fact that the economy is improving, and more men are taking better care of their skin and bodies. The desire to “look your best” has gone past going to the gym, and is pushing men to consider skin care products and cosmetic surgery to get ahead in the workplace and in their personal lives.
