Tummy Tuck Introduction
Despite healthy habits, the midsection is often one of the most challenging areas to tone. Whether due to pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or genetics, many people struggle with loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a transformative procedure that restores the shape, tone, and firmness of the abdomen. At Maryland Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Adam Summers and Dr. Christopher Spittler perform advanced tummy tuck techniques tailored to your body’s unique needs. The result is a flatter, more sculpted midsection and renewed confidence in your appearance—whether you’re in fitted clothing or simply enjoying a moment of self-assurance.
A tummy tuck is a surgical body contouring procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. It is particularly beneficial for individuals whose abdominal wall has been stretched due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, or the natural aging process. The surgery restores core strength, smooths out bulges, and creates a flatter abdominal contour.
The procedure involves a low incision made across the lower abdomen, typically hidden beneath underwear or swimwear. Through this incision, excess tissue is removed, and the abdominal muscles are sutured together if they have separated. The remaining skin is then redraped to create a taut, natural-looking finish. Liposuction may also be used to refine the waistline and enhance overall results.
Various types of arm lifts depend on the patient’s individual needs and medical history. At Maryland Plastic Surgery, your dedicated surgeon will help you choose the best option for you.
A full or traditional tummy tuck is the most comprehensive version of the procedure. It is ideal for patients with significant skin laxity, fat accumulation, and muscle separation. This approach addresses the entire abdominal area, from just below the ribcage to the pubic region. The belly button is repositioned as part of this technique for a natural look.
A mini tummy tuck is suited for individuals with a small amount of excess skin and fat located below the belly button. It does not typically involve repositioning the navel or extensive muscle repair, making it a less invasive option with a shorter recovery period. This is a great choice for patients who are otherwise in good shape but want to fine-tune their lower abdomen.
An extended tummy tuck goes beyond the abdominal area and addresses the flanks or “love handles” as well. It is often recommended for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and want to remove excess skin from the sides and lower back in addition to the front of the abdomen.
At Maryland Plastic Surgery & PURE MedSpa, Dr. Adam Summers and Dr. Christopher Spittler bring decades of experience and artistry to every cosmetic surgery they perform. Known for their precision and natural-looking results, both surgeons take a personalized approach—starting with an in-depth consultation to understand your goals and areas of concern. Whether you’re looking to lift sagging jowls, smooth deep lines, or restore youthful contours, Dr. Summers and Dr. Spittler are committed to helping you look like the best version of yourself. Their reputation for excellence and their dedication to patient satisfaction means you’ll be in the best hands—every step of the way.
A tummy tuck is more than just a cosmetic procedure—it offers both physical and emotional benefits. By removing excess skin and restoring muscle strength, it creates a firmer and more proportionate body contour that can significantly improve your quality of life.
Benefits include:
A flatter, firmer abdomen with improved muscle tone
Elimination of loose, hanging skin caused by pregnancy or weight loss
Correction of diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles)
Improved posture and reduced lower back pain in some patients
Enhanced fit of clothing and swimwear
Greater self-confidence and body comfort
Long-lasting results with stable weight and healthy lifestyle habits
The best candidates for a tummy tuck are individuals who are in good overall health and close to their ideal body weight, but who are struggling with sagging skin, muscle weakness, or localized fat that cannot be addressed through exercise or diet alone.
You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you:
Have excess abdominal skin or loose skin after pregnancy or weight loss
Experience abdominal muscle separation or a protruding belly
Are not planning future pregnancies
Are at or near a stable weight and committed to maintaining it
Do not smoke or are willing to quit prior to and after surgery
Are in good physical and emotional health
Have realistic expectations about the outcome
During your consultation, Dr. Summers or Dr. Spittler will evaluate your medical history, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals to determine if a tummy tuck is the right procedure for you.
LET’S GET YOU STARTED
On the day of your surgery at Maryland Plastic Surgery & PURE MedSpa, you’ll be welcomed into our state-of-the-art surgical suite by Dr. Summers, Dr. Spittler, and our experienced clinical team. Before your procedure begins, we’ll review your surgical plan with you once more — giving you a final opportunity to ask questions or share any last-minute thoughts. Our goal is to ensure you feel completely comfortable, confident, and cared for every step of the way.
A board-certified anesthesiologist will then administer the appropriate anesthesia, which will have been carefully selected and discussed during your consultation to ensure a pain-free, relaxed experience throughout your procedure.
Once your ideal results have been achieved, your surgeon will carefully close the incisions using advanced suturing techniques designed to support healing and minimize visible scarring. In some cases, a small drain may be placed to prevent fluid buildup and support a smoother recovery process.
Your tummy tuck will be performed in our private, accredited surgical suite in Millersville, MD. After arriving and completing pre-operative preparations, you’ll meet with your surgeon for surgical markings and final review. General anesthesia is administered for your comfort and safety.
Once the anesthesia takes effect, a low horizontal incision is made across the lower abdomen. Through this incision, excess skin and fat are removed, and underlying muscles are tightened if needed. In full tummy tucks, a second incision is often made around the navel to allow for proper redraping of the skin and repositioning of the belly button.
The remaining skin is pulled taut, and incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. You’ll be placed in a compression garment and carefully monitored in the recovery area before being discharged home with detailed aftercare instructions.
Recovery from a tummy tuck is a gradual process that varies depending on the extent of your procedure and your individual healing ability. Most patients take one to two weeks off from work and can resume light activities after 10 to 14 days.
During recovery, you can expect:
Swelling, bruising, and soreness around the incision area
Limited bending, lifting, and standing upright for the first several days
Wearing a compression garment to support healing and reduce swelling
Drains may be temporarily placed to prevent fluid accumulation
Gradual return to normal activities over four to six weeks
Follow-up visits to monitor healing and remove sutures if needed
It’s important to follow all post-operative instructions, including how to care for incisions, manage discomfort, and avoid strenuous activities. Most patients see dramatic improvements in body contour within six weeks, with full results visible after several months.

Tummy tuck results are considered long-lasting, especially when patients maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. While natural aging and gravity continue, the improvements in muscle tone and skin removal remain visible for many years. Significant weight fluctuations or pregnancy after the procedure can compromise results.
Yes, a tummy tuck will leave a scar, usually a horizontal line across the lower abdomen just above the pubic area. Surgeons take care to place this incision where it can be easily concealed by underwear or swimwear. With proper scar care and time, the scar fades and becomes much less noticeable.
Yes, but only if the stretch marks are located on the skin that is removed during surgery, typically below the belly button. Stretch marks higher on the abdomen will not be removed but may appear slightly improved as the remaining skin is tightened.
Discomfort following surgery is common and can be moderate during the first few days. Most patients describe the sensation as tightness or soreness in the abdominal muscles. Pain is managed with prescription medication, and most patients begin feeling more comfortable within a week.
Yes, pregnancy is still possible after a tummy tuck. However, because pregnancy can stretch the abdominal muscles and skin, it may affect the appearance of your results. For this reason, it is typically recommended to wait until after you’ve completed your family before undergoing the procedure.
Many patients require temporary surgical drains to prevent fluid accumulation in the days following surgery. These drains are usually removed within the first week and are an important part of the healing process. Your surgeon will provide instructions on how to care for them.
Most patients can resume light walking within a few days, but strenuous activity and core exercises should be avoided for four to six weeks. Gradual return to exercise is recommended, and your surgeon will give you personalized guidance during follow-up visits.
Liposuction is often combined with tummy tuck surgery to refine the waistline and enhance the overall result. However, it is not always necessary. Your surgeon will determine whether liposuction should be included based on your goals and anatomy.
The decision depends on the amount of excess skin, fat, and muscle laxity. A mini tummy tuck is best for patients with concerns limited to the lower abdomen, while a full tummy tuck addresses the entire abdominal wall and includes repositioning the navel. Your surgeon will help you choose the best option.
In most cases, tummy tucks are considered elective cosmetic procedures and are not covered by insurance. However, if there is a documented medical need, such as skin infections or functional impairment, partial coverage may be considered. We’re happy to assist with financing options to help make your procedure more accessible.
