Breast Lift Treatment Options

Breast Lift in Glen Burnie, MD

As you age, your body goes through many changes. The natural aging process can have an effect on your breasts as the tendons stretch and the skin becomes less elastic. Weight gain and loss, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can also have an impact on the breasts as they grow larger and then shrink back down. Sometimes this can lead to sagging breasts or breasts that are uneven in size and shape.

If you struggle with any of these changes, we can help to correct sagging breasts with our breast lift treatments at Maryland Plastic Surgery and PURE MedSpa. We offer both surgical and non-invasive breast lift treatments.

What Is a Breast Lift?

Sometimes a breast lift can be confused with a breast augmentation. While a breast augmentation surgery involves inserting implants or using fat transfers to increase the size of the breast, a breast lift is simply taking the existing breast tissue and placing it higher on the chest. Breast lifts are appropriate for women who have sagging breasts, excess skin on the breast, or nipples that are pointing downward. Breast augmentation and breast reduction are both common additions to breast lift surgeries.

What Are the Different Types of Breast Lifts?

Traditional Breast Lift Surgery

During a traditional breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, incisions are made and skin is removed to help lift the breast into a better position. This type of procedure is often indicated for women with mild, moderate, or severe sagging of the breasts.

A traditional breast lift can provide many benefits. Not only can it help you to feel great in your body, but it can also help to relieve back pain, reduce sweating and irritation under the lower breast tissue, and make you appear more youthful.

During a breast lift surgery, your surgeon will make incisions on your breasts, remove any excess skin, and lift the breast into a better position on the chest. We can also reduce the size of the areola by removing some of the areola during the procedure. Before your surgery, you will have a chance to discuss all of your goals and concerns with your doctor so that you are fully prepared for your surgery.

Laser Breast Lift Treatments

For women who have milder breast sagging, laser breast treatments can be a great non-invasive option. Laser breast lift treatments offer a twofold treatment that involves tightening both the outer and inner breast tissue. During the first portion of the treatment, a laser produces thermal heat that stimulates the outer breast tissue which can cause it to tighten. Next, the inner tissue is also targeted with the laser treatment.

Downtime for laser breast lift treatments is much shorter than a surgery. You may have tightness around your breasts and you will need to stay away from intense workouts, but otherwise you may return to all of your normal activities. Laser breast lifts can be effective for mildly sagging breasts, nipples that point downward, and breasts that are different sizes.

What Are the Incision Options for Traditional Breast Lift?

If you are investing in a full surgical breast lift, your surgeon will choose between several different incision options. Incision location will be determined by how much sagging you have in your breasts and what results you want to achieve through the procedure. Our goal is to give you the best results with the least amount of incision possible. While you will have scarring after the surgery, our techniques will help to minimize scarring and you can expect the scar to fade over time.

The “Doughnut” or Periareolar Breast Lift

When possible, we use the doughnut or periareolar incision. This incision will cause the least amount of visible scarring but can only be used for patients who have smaller breasts and less sagging. During this type of surgery, we make an incision around the areola. We then make another incision to remove the skin in a doughnut shape around the areola. The next step is to suture the inner and outer circle together to restore the shape of the breast. While there will be a scar, it can be virtually unnoticable in this area.

Verticle or Lollipop Incision

If there is more sagging, we may utilyze a vertical incision, sometimes also known as a lollipop incision. An incision is made around the nipple as with the periareolar breast lift. After that, an additional incision is made vertically from the areola to the crease of the breast so that more skin can be removed.

Transverse or Anchor Incision

If even more skin needs to be removed because of more severe sagging, we may need to make an incision around the areola, a vertical incision, and a transverse incision along the underside of your breast. This allows us to remove the maximum amount of skin and to lift the breast as much as possible while reducing elasticity. With this type of incision, we are able to hide both the round incision and the lower incision next to the areola and in the crease of the breast.
