Non-Surgical Facelift vs. Surgical Facelift: Which is Right for You?

Facelift Treatments and Procedures in Millersville, MD

Facelifts, both surgical and non-surgical, are a good way to reduce sagging skin, resolve wrinkles, and treat other signs of aging. If you are looking for a way to combat these concerns, you may be wondering whether a surgical or a non-surgical treatment would be better in your situation.

At Maryland Plastic Surgery and PURE Medspa, we are able to offer both types of facelifts in Millersville, MD. We can walk you through the benefits of each kind of treatment or procedure and help find the best solution for you.

Understanding Facial Aging

The aging process affects each person differently, but everyone will experience changes as their skin matures. One of the most common effects of aging is loss of skin elasticity due to decreased collagen production. Some people also experience loss of facial volume as fat deposits shift. Individuals may notice more wrinkles, skin that sags on their jawline, and skin that feels less firm which can lead many to consider a facelift procedure.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift is any type of procedure that helps the face look more youthful and refreshed. These treatments and surgeries tighten the skin, improve facial contours, and reduce wrinkles. The results that you receive will depend on the severity of your concerns and which treatment or procedure you choose.

What Is a Surgical Facelift?

A surgical facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, involves surgically lifting the tissues of the face and removing excess skin. During this procedure, incisions are made around the ears and in the hairline so that the surgeon can access and lift underlying muscles. These procedures can provide extensive correction for sagging skin and deep lines. Results of surgical facelifts are typically long-lasting, ranging from five years for a mini facelift to 15 for a full facelift.

Types of Surgical Facelift

Suture Suspension Lift

At our surgical center, Dr. Summers can perform the Suture Suspension facelift procedure sometimes called the Threadlift or the Featherlift. This one-hour facelift that Dr. Summers helped to develop involves making a small incision just over the ear in the hairline. Next, permanent sutures are inserted to help lift the cheek, jawline, and neck.

Full Facelift

The complete facelift is the most extensive type of facelift surgery. An incision is made from the hairline above the ear, around the ear, and into the hairline at the base of the head. During a full rhytidectomy, the underlying structure called the SMAS layer is lifted using sutures. Then the skin is redraped and the excess removed for a more contoured jawline.

Mini Facelift

Mini facelift surgery is indicated for younger patients who have less sagging but still want to achieve lift in the lower half of their face. With this surgery, a smaller incision is made, which can lead to less visible scarring and a shorter recovery time. The underlying muscles and tissues are still tightened and lifted, and excess skin is removed.

Advantages of a Surgical Facelift

Surgical facelifts are a good option for many people because they provide more dramatic results that are longer-lasting. They may be the right choice for patients looking for more significant changes to their lower face or jawline.

What Is a Non-Surgical Facelift?

A non-surgical facelift is any treatment that aims to rejuvenate the face without invasive surgery. Treatments can include dermal fillers, neuromodulators, laser treatments, and more. Many of these treatments can help restore lost volume, reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, tighten sagging skin, and improve the texture and appearance of facial skin.

Types of Non-Surgical Facelift

Liquid Facelift

A liquid facelift is a term that describes the use of fillers, neuromodulators, and other injectables to help lift the face and make it look more youthful. At our medspa, we offer a complete range of injectables that can correct a wide range of concerns.

Botox® is one of the most widely known injectables. This neuromodulator relaxes muscles in the face to reduce dynamic wrinkles. When used properly, it can also help to retrain muscles to provide more lift over time.

Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® can provide instant lift and volume when injected under the skin. Products such as Radiesse® and Sculptra® can refresh and lift the appearance by stimulating collagen production in the skin.

Laser Facelift

A laser facelift involves the use of a laser device to lift sagging cheeks and contour the jawline without surgery. This treatment can also help to reduce fat under the chin, shrink the skin, and stimulate collagen and elastin production to make your skin look and feel more youthful.

Advantages of a Non-Surgical Facelift

One of the advantages of a non-surgical facelift is the minimal downtime that you will have with these treatments. Virtually all of these treatments can be done in less than an hour, and you can go back to work immediately following your appointment.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Non-Surgical and Surgical Facelifts

When you are choosing between a non-surgical or a surgical facelift, it is important to consider your goals and expectations, your health status, and your preferences regarding downtime. During your consultation, we will discuss all of these factors and help you find the right treatment.
