Men and Plastic Surgery

According to the 2017 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report, the Cosmetic Surgery Gender Distribution chart shows there were 1,327,718 total male procedures in the U.S.

When plastic surgery comes to mind, most people picture women reconstructing their faces, enhancing their breasts or getting rid of fat in troubled areas. But treatments are not only for females – males also have the opportunity and desire to keep up with cosmetic maintenance. According to the 2017 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report, the Cosmetic Surgery Gender Distribution chart shows there were 1,327,718 total male procedures in the U.S.

Additionally, there are still men who haven’t tried cosmetic surgery yet who are interested. A survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, found that 31% of men reported being “extremely likely” to consider a surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedure. About 44% said they would do so to improve self-confidence, 31% said they get surgery to please a partner, another 31% would try a procedure to look less fatigued and 25% would consider a treatment to remain competitive in the working world.

What treatments are men considering?

Liposuction remains one of the top surgical cosmetic procedures considered by men, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. This option is often used to reduce stubborn fat in problem areas that can’t be eliminated solely with diet and exercise. It can also be used for a male breast reduction, to reshape the chest.

“Injectables are becoming more popular in men. “

“Liposuction is also a very popular option – with newer, ‘hi-definition’ techniques, we can sculpt the abs, reduce the chest, and more,” said Dr. Alex Sobel, president of the ABCS. “All of this sculpting can be accomplished through tiny incisions, and the patient can usually resume desk work after a long weekend off.”

Injectables are also becoming more popular in men. Filler can help to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, restore lost volume in troubled areas, fill scars and contour facial features. Men love the results that come of this option, but they also love the quick and seamless process – a filler treatment can take as little as a few minutes and comes with virtually no downtime.

“Being a female cosmetic surgeon, many people are surprised to learn that men are some of my most loyal and enthusiastic patients for injectable fillers,” Dr. Maria Lombardo told the ABCS. “They appreciate the more youthful look fillers can quickly provide—and the fact that fillers are temporary affords them greater control over their appearance as they age and their personal goals evolve.”

Other procedures men consider include calf augmentation, dermabrasion, face lifts, tummy tucks, pectoral implants, rhinoplasty, laser hair removal and more.
